Cacao Powder
Our organic cacao powder is a chocolatey, nutrient-dense powder with a slightly bitter undertone, sourced sustainably from the cocoa tree in warm climates of Ghana.
It contains a range of beneficial molecules such as iron, potassium, magnesium and caffeine and a variety of powerful antioxidants. These antioxidants are touted for their therapeutic potential with vascular function and blood flow.
- Flavonoids
- Magnesium
- Iron
- Potassium
- Caffeine
- Epicatechin
- Procyanidins
What is the difference between cocoa and cacao?
Both cacao and cocoa are sourced from the same plant, the cacao bean. Therefore, they are similar, however, cocoa is usually higher in fat and sugar than cacao. This is simply because cocoa undergoes further processing, which is usually at higher temperatures. Cacao, on the other hand, is not that sweet, because it is cold-pressed without the addition of any other ingredients.
Will cacao keep me awake?
Maybe, maybe not. Cacao powder does contain a moderate amount of caffeine, which is why the cacao bean was used as one of the first energy boosters in ancient times. If you are sensitive to caffeine, it may be best to avoid it in the afternoon and evening.
Key Health Aspects of Cacao
Our cacao is 100% organic without any added ingredients. The cacao bean is delicately cold-pressed and ground into a very fine powder to protect its potent nutrient profile which includes:
Flavonoids
Flavonoids are a group of plant chemicals that provide several health benefits. They are not vitamins or minerals, think of them as additional components only in plant foods that may benefit overall health.
Interestingly, when they were first discovered they were called “vitamin P” in the first half of the 1900s, as they reduced the Permeability of blood vessels and therefore resulted in less risk of bleeding, so overall better functioning veins and arteries.
Flavanols
Flavanols are a subset of flavonoids that are highly concentrated in cacao powder, these amazing plant compounds are also found in teas, beans, fruits, berries, and red wine. They have antioxidant and vasodilating (increased blood flow) properties, both of which may contribute to heart health which has been observed in previous studies.
Epicatechin
The main flavanol found in cacao powder - epicatechin is also found in high concentrations in our cacao powder, relative to other plant foods. Epicatechin may increase the production of nitric oxide, a molecule that allows blood vessels to dilate (widen) and therefore increases blood flow and may reduce blood pressure.
Magnesium
Cacao powder is a good source of magnesium, which plays an essential role in a wide array of biological functions necessary for good health. Magnesium deficiency is the second most common nutrient deficiency following vitamin D in developed countries.
Iron
An essential mineral, which regulates oxygen transport around the body. A lack of Iron can lead to fatigue, impaired cognitive function, depressive-like symptoms, and other unwanted symptoms.
Potassium
Potassium is an essential mineral found predominately in fruits, vegetables, and beans. Many people do not meet the daily requirement of potassium, and by increasing their intake they could experience many benefits i.e. blood pressure reduction.
Each small teaspoon contributes to your recommended daily intake for magnesium, iron, potassium, copper and more. These are all essential minerals which play major roles in the body all the way from muscle contraction to carrying oxygen in the body and promoting immune function.
