Plent Marine Collagen source fish collagen from an ASC certified fish. The ASC or The Aquaculture Stewardship Council is the world’s leading certification for farmed seafood. This is to make sure that:

1. The fish are responsibly grown in a clean environment, disease-free, under animal welfare and the feeds are from a trusted source.
2. The fish farm maintains a positive relationship with the neighboring communities, being responsible for its surroundings during fish production.
3. The workers of the fish farm are treated fairly and well-compensated.

In the collagen industry there’s a lot of misunderstanding about sustainability in regard to fish collagen or collagen products overall. What you’ll run into is MSC (Marine Stewardship Council) and ASC certified raw material. Most consumers are familiar with these from sea food they can buy in the supermarket.

It is crucial to understand that sustainability does not default on equal quality. Fish collagen such as wild-caught cod, MSC certified or not, have shown to contain arsenic (and inorganic arsenic) and lead. ASC-certified collagen does not. It is crucial to understand that sustainability does not equal quality by default. Laboratory testing has shown that fish collagen from wild-caught cod - MSC certified or not - contains arsenic (and inorganic arsenic) and lead. Plent Marine Collagen is free of arsenic and lead, as confirmed by independent laboratory tests. This is one of the main reasons why we use collagen from farmed fish for our Fish Collagen.

Traditionally, collagen supplements use bovine (cows) and porcine (pigs) as collagen sources. But as further studies were done, collagen from marine life is more sustainable and of better quality.
