Collagen

What is Collagen?

Collagen, the most abundant protein in the body, makes up more than one-third of all tissue! This protein is a crucial component of skin, hair, tendons, ligaments, muscle, and more. Our high-quality bovine powder has been formulated with the most delicate of measures to ensure the nutritional quality and range of potential benefits remain intact.

Collagen has been shown to have antioxidant properties, lipid-lowering activity, connective tissue benefits, and may help to promote skin and wound healing. When blood vessels become injured, collagen is exposed and attracts cells called platelets from the blood which causes blood clotting. This helps to prevent excessive bleeding when the damage occurs. In addition, collagen also plays a key role in supporting the functions of blood vessels.

Who should take collagen?

There are currently no recommendations around specific groups that "should" take collagen supplements. This is because it's use as a supplement is relatively new. However, because of the emerging evidence in favour of some specific impacts in the body, it may be a suitable option for the elderly, especially among those experiencing joint pain and deterioration.

In addition, those who are experiencing accelerated skin ageing, with increased wrinkles and blemished. Collagen may be a useful supplement here.

How is collagen powder made?

Collagen powder, when sourced from trusted brands is formulated by drying, purifying and milling the bones and cartilage of either fish, bovine (cows) or pig. We offer both fish and bovine collagen for those that have preferences. This powder is then purified to remove any additional compounds and tested to ensure this.

What is the difference between collagen and collagen peptides?

Collagen when in the form of hydrolyzed peptides, is simply a more bioavailable form of the supplement. A process of hydrolysis through the application of enzymes is used to 'snip' the long, complex strands of amino acids, to form simpler peptides. These are of low molecular weight and can pass more easily and efficiently into the blood.

What collagen supplement is best?

As always, the first piece of advice we give here is to only shop at trusted and reputable brands. There are an uncountable number of collagen supplements available on the market today, and unfortunately, there can be a high level of variation between them!

Key health aspects of collagen

Collagen is relatively new to the world of nutritional supplements. Since the discovery of the benefits of supplementing bovine collagen, studies have uncovered potential roles of the protein for protecting bone degeneration, skin-aging, and joint pain.

Joint Pain

Collagen is the main component of all tendons, ligaments and our articular (joint) cartilage (Source: Examine.com). This has sparked the idea that collagen supplementation may help to reduce joint pain.

In one high-quality study, 140 participants that consumed 10g of collagen each day 6 months reported reduced joint pain compared to placebo (Source: NCBI)

Bone health

As mentioned, the most widely-studied effect of collagen supplements is the role in the protection of bone. This is especially important for female athletes and the elderly who are at risk for arthritis and osteoporosis.

A recent systematic review concluded that “Collagen hydrolysate has a positive therapeutic role in osteoporosis and osteoarthritis: potentially increasing bone mineral density, having a protective effect on articular cartilage and, primarily, providing symptomatic relief of pain.” (Source: Scielo.br).

Similarly, another study showed that 10g each day of collagen relieving symptoms of osteoarthritis while the placebo yielded no effects (Source: NCBI).

Skin Vitality

Just like our ligaments and tendons, collagen is a major component in the skin.

In a large study review the dermatological benefits of collagen were shown. The review included 11 studies and reported that:

“Preliminary results are promising for the short and long-term use of oral collagen supplements for wound healing and skin aging.”

“Oral collagen supplements also increase skin elasticity, hydration, and dermal collagen density. Collagen supplementation is generally safe with no reported adverse events.”
