Guarana

What is guarana?

Guarana is a delicious, tropical plant that grows in the Amazonian regions of South America (Source: Examine.com). The fruit seeds from the guarana plant has risen to the forefront as a popular natural stimulant, and in fact, contains more caffeine than coffee beans!

Guarana has also gathered a popular name due to the healthful, antioxidant compounds it contains including catechins and tannins (Source: NCBI).

What does guarana do?

Research around the beneficial applications and effects of guarana are very much preliminary. Many of the already-published studies are either conducted in vitro (in a lab) or among animals. However, one of the primary reasons that our customers purchase this supplement is as an antioxidant-packed alternative to other caffeine-containing beverages.

Caffeine is important for improving focus and alertness, and one human study found that guarana powder led to improved performance in cognitive tasks compared to a placebo group (Source: NCBI).

Key health aspects of guarana

Focus and alertness

As mentioned, one of the primary reasons for the popularity of this supplement is the naturally rich caffeine content of the guarana seeds. This powder can be mixed with water or your favourite juice to make a tropical punch of caffeine! Caffeine can contribute to improved focus and alertness during both cognitive tasks and sporting performance.

Skin vitality and anti-aging

Another reason for the popularity of this supplement is the potential benefits it may provide for skin vitality through the antioxidant activity of the seeds. One study applied the seed compounds to roundworm species in a lab setting and reported a high level of antioxidant activity. In other words, the guarana compound showed the ability to scavenge free radicals and increase the resistance levels against oxidative stress. (Source: NCBI)

Inflammation

Any natural food supplement that contains the rich antioxidant profile that guarana boasts, will have potential effects in helping to reduce inflammation. Antioxidants including catechins (guarana is packed with these) can help to rid the body of harmful, reactive molecules known as reactive oxygen species. These can damage our tissues and contribute to the development of diseases over time.

By regularly consuming plenty of antioxidant-containing foods and beverages, we can help to prevent the buildup of these!
