Coconut oil

Coconut oil is known as the ‘milk’ of the Cocos Nucifera or Coconut, from which it is sourced. This was and remains a staple food for several southern-pacific island populations, the majority of which are known for their remarkable health and longevity.

Coconut oil has previously received negative impressions from the media, typically due to the high fat content it contains (>99% fat). This is not incorrect; the oil is rich in medium-chain fatty acids (MCTs). These MCTs however, have been shown to provide a range of benefits when incorporated into an energy-balanced diet. In fact, recent evidence has shown that when consumed in moderation, coconut oil may have specific benefits to the skin, brian, and providing energy during performance.

Our 100% organic coconut oil is extracted from coconut without the use of any chemicals whatsoever. The creamy and delicious oil has a variety of uses such as cooking, teeth cleaning, as a spread and in baking. For some inspiration, check out these coconut oil recipes here!

Key health aspects of coconut oil

Efficient energy

The fatty acids in coconut oil are easily digested and enter directly into the liver, where they are then circulated to the cells. Because of their smaller structure, they can cross the cell membranes easier. Once in the cell, they can now be used to produce energy in a more efficient manner than longer chain fatty acids.

Rapid digestion

As mentioned, the MCT's in coconut oil are shorter in length, but also more soluble and are liquid at room temperature. What does this mean?

When these MCT’s are ingested, they require less work and time to digest and absorb, compared to longer-chain fatty acids. This can help to reduce the contribution of carbohydrate storage (glycogen) which can help to delay the onset of fatigue.

Reduced storage of fat

Because the MCT's in coconut oil are rapidly available to produce energy, they may not be stored well in the body, and so are commonly used as replacements for other types of fat. It is for this reason, that many supplements with MCT’s when cutting weight and body fat.

Essential fatty acids

As mentioned, several years ago, coconut oil recieved negative labels due to the high fat content. However, fats are essential nutrients, which means they are required for daily life. Apart from fats making up the majority of stored energy in the body, they are also essential for the absorption of micronutrients. Because of their high digestibility, MCT’s can therefore aid vitamin and mineral absorption in the intestine.
