What is Matcha Tea?

Matcha powder is similar to green tea, in the fact that they are both sourced from Camelia Sinensis, a native plant of China. Matcha however, has become extremely popular due to the more concentrated source of catechins and other antioxidants it provides. The powder is produced from stone-ground Matcha leaves, after only the stem and veins have been removed. Also, prior to harvest, the plant is shielded from sunlight for 3-4 weeks, which increases chlorophyll and amino acid production. These processes allow the nutrients within the plant to stay intact.

Because Matcha powder incorporates all parts of the leaf, it provides a wider profile of nutrients than traditional green tea, which is made from simply boiling the leaves! (1). For example, of the wide variety of green tea products available, Matcha is the most concentrated source of caffeine. However, the caffeine content is still less than half of that in a regular cup of coffee, and so is a great alternative for those who do not react well to high levels of the stimulant.

Health Benefits of Matcha Tea

Antioxidants
Catechins are phenolic compounds found in tea, fruits, berries and cocoa with high antioxidant potential. Matcha green tea has been recently shown to contain more than three times more catechins than any other green tea types (1). This is because the entirety of the leaf is used in the powder. One of the catechins that are most abundant in Matcha is epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG), which makes up 65% of Matcha (2). The polyphenol EGCG has been shown to provide a range of health benefits such as reducing inflammation, aiding recovery, mitigating free radical buildup (3).

Liver Health
Fat buildup in the liver is major risk factor for chronic disease. Excess levels of liver enzymes are one of the key indicators of these fatty streaks. The Camelia Sinensis plant, has been shown to be effective in mitigating and reducing these levels, however. In a study among those who had non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, and elevated liver enzyme levels, supplementing green tea for 12 weeks was examined. After the trial, there were significant reductions in the liver enzymes, ALT and AST among those who used green tea, with no significant changes in the placebo group (4). High levels of these enzymes is one the indicators of a fatty liver and so by reducing these, indicate improved liver health.

May Increase Fat Oxidation
Fat oxidation is the utilization of fat in the body for the production of energy. However, fat is not an ideal energy source for the body and so typically only contributes minimally to energy expenditure. Interestingly, the caffeine and catechin EGCG in Matcha may enhance fat oxidation before, during and after exercising (5,6). In one study, healthy men completed 30 minutes intense exercise after consuming green tea extract and on another day a corn-flour placebo. When green tea extract was consumed, there was a 17% increased fat oxidation rate (Venables et al., 2008). However, this is a novel area of research and it has not been fully uncovered yet, and some studies have rejected the oxidation-enhancing effects of green tea.
