What is Phyllium Husk Fiber

Psyllium is an impactful and highly beneficial source of dietary fiber (arabinoxylan) derived from the Plantago Ovata, a native plant of Asia, Africa and Mediterranean regions of Europe! (1). Our Psyllium is sourced from the husks of the plant seedlings, and naturally ground into a fine powder, that can be easily added to your oats or smoothies. Yum!
Psyllium is a widely popular supplement which stems initially from its use as a dietary laxative. It is known as a soluble (or viscous) fiber which refers to the ability to dissolve in water, forming a gel-like substance. This gel resides in the gut and adds water to the stool, enables defecation and provides a host of additional benefits which we outline below (2).

Health Benefits of Phyllium Husk Fiber

”Reduces Cholesterol” - Psyllium is one of the single most powerful natural supplements for reducing total cholesterol and LDL cholesterol. Excess consumption of alcohol, fast foods, smoking or stress can lead to elevated levels of LDL cholesterol. When cholesterol is elevated for an extended period of time it can increase the risk of chronic disease. In one of the largest reviews conducted to date (3), 24 studies examining Psyllium’s health effects were included. It was reported in this study that Pysllium may help to reduce cholesterol by up to 20%, and LDL cholesterol by up to 24%! It was also observed that it was an effective complementary supplement to statin drug therapy (4), so ask your doctor if it is something you should try. The best part is that the supplements used in these studies often contained 10 g/day (5), and a single tablespoon of our Psyllium will provide 12 grams!
”Helps Weight Loss” - Psyllium, among other fibers, has been shown to reduce appetite and increase feelings of fullness (6). This may help to prevent overeating and potentially help with weight loss. In one study, Psyllium was supplemented for six months by overweight adults and compared to another fibre type and a control. The results indicated that the Psyllium group had more than double the weight loss, than both other two groups. (7).
“Alleviates Constipation” - Psyllium is one of the most effective natural remedies for constipation. The increased water that is retained in the gut, when psyllium is ingested, passes through the colon and increasing the fluidity of the hardened stool, common in constipation. In a was recent study, it was shown that when chronically constipated patients supplemented Psyllium for four weeks, 75% of participants responded with improved symptoms and bowel movements (8).

Gluten-free Baking with Psyllium Husk Fibers

When you want to bake successfully, gluten is almost essential for a delicious end product. Fortunately, it is also possible to prepare beautiful baking without the use of gluten. Psyllium fibers ensure that gluten-free dough binds better and crumbles less.
Mix about 5 to 7 grams of psyllium fibers with 500 grams of flour or flour. Often you need extra water for breads with psyllium fibers, because it attracts a lot of moisture. As soon as moisture reaches the fibers, they begin to work.
