Product Description

Chlorella & Spirulina
Chlorella and spirulina are both microalgae that provide food and oxygen for a wide variety of aquatic life. Chlorella is known as a freshwater alga, while spirulina is a blue-green algae cultivated in both fresh and salt water. Chlorella has been consumed in the human diet since the 1950s when scientists were in need of a plentiful and renewable food source for the sudden population increase. (1). Spirulina, however, has been a part of the human diet for much longer, dating back to the Aztecs. The high protein content (50-60%) of these powerful superfoods is just one of the reasons they can be fantastic additions to your diet! Because of their unique and expansive nutritional profile, both chlorella and spirulina are often considered among the most nutrient-dense superfoods on the planet!

We believe you should not have to choose between these nutritional powerhouses, and so we have formulated a wonderful blend of both Chlorella and Spirulina. This way you can get the best of both worlds from our superb combo tablets. Both are excellent sources of protein, iron, chlorophyll and a host of antioxidants.

About Chlorella & Spirulina
Chlorella provides a powerful punch of iron, which is a common concern among vegans and vegetarians. However, everybody needs these nutrients, not just plant-based eaters. Iron is essential for oxygen delivery around the body and the reduction of fatigue and tiredness (2).
Spirulina is a rich source of antioxidants, especially phycocyanin. This antioxidant has been well-studied and has been shown to have a host of benefits. Harmful oxidative species buildup occurs in our bodies when we eat processed foods, smoke, drink alcohol, become anxious or stressed. If these are not eradicated by a healthy balance of antioxidants, they can have a host of harmful consequences. These include DNA damage, clot formation (cardiovascular disease start-point), joint inflammation, cognitive detriments, and insulin resistance (3). Ensure that you are getting enough antioxidants, to detoxify these substances in your body.
Both Chlorella and Spirulina are rich sources of Chlorophyll. This is the green pigment that all plants require to transform sunlight into nutrients through photosynthesis. In Humans, chlorophyll has been shown to have a range of potential benefits. For example, it may have a role in reducing the absorption of ingested carcinogens (Jupert et al.,).

Benefits of Chlorella & Spirulina
- Among the many antioxidants in Spirulina, the primary active component is phycocyanin. This is a powerful antioxidant which protects against DNA damage, inflammation and free radical formation (4).
- Similarly, the high antioxidant content of Chlorella has been shown to increase plasma (blood) antioxidant concentrations in smokers, following 6-weeks of supplementation (5).
- In another study among pregnant females, supplementing with 6g of Chlorella (2 servings), led to reduced rates of anemia and pregnancy-induced hypertension (high blood pressure), compared to the control group (6).
- Several studies have reported substantial improvements in blood lipid profiles (7, 8, 9) among those supplementing Spirulina for an extended period compared to those who did not.
- Chlorella and Spirulina have both shown to support the immune system.
